Submission Criteria

Data Format

The submission of datasets in the form of ASCII, SAS transport, SPSS portable, or Stata files is encouraged. If the files are in ASCII format, SPSS and/or SAS setup files should be included as separate ASCII files. Datasets in other formats may also be accepted. Please contact DSDR staff prior to submission. All identifying information should be removed from the records to ensure confidentiality.

Documentation Format

When possible, all documentation including codebooks, data collection instruments, summary statistics, database dictionaries, project summaries/descriptions, and bibliographies of publications pertaining to the data should be submitted as ASCII, Microsoft Word or Excel, or DDI XML files. Documentation should meet the standards for submission as outlined in the Guide to Social Science Data Preparation and Archiving (PDF 1.47MB). When documentation is available only in paper form, please submit original documents or a high quality copy.

Prior to submitting files, researchers are required to complete the ICPSR Data Deposit Form (PDF 169Kl Word 74K).
