The sensitivity level of the data along with the guidance of the principal investigator determines the mode of access for restricted data collections housed at ICPSR. In some cases data are so sensitive that ICPSR or the principal investigator needs to control access by requiring that data users travel to where the data are stored. ICPSR maintains a Data Enclave specifically for this purpose. Prospective users of these special data must apply to use the enclave and while in residence must use special non-networked computers for data analysis. Their analytic output is checked to ensure that it meets specific requirements for leaving the enclave.
